The name ‘Barrangul’ is an indigenous word – meaning Pelican, so rightfully, the majestic bird is the feature of our business logo.
The present-day MV Barrangul is the largest cruising, licenced restaurant in SA, at 25 metres long, the motor vessel (MV) river boat, was built by founders Alan and Davia Smith. It was first launched from Renmark on 22nd of November 1978. The current boat replaced their original, smaller, MV Barrangul which was sold, renamed ‘Tangara’, and operated down river for a time, before becoming a private vessel.
Steve and Chrissy Brindal, captain and caterer respectively, purchased the MV Barrangul on 1st February 2016. Since that time, they have extensively renovated and updated the interior, now seating up to 75 restaurant guests, and continue to share the serenity of this unique, river restaurant perspective, of the South Australian riverland region.
Many families, friends and travellers remember the Brindal’s from previous cruising adventures, as the couple have experience on many vessels from Mannum to Mildura, The Darling, Wetherall Lakes, and Cooper Creek – Innaminka.
Captain Steve Brindal is a certified sea-going and river going Captain. His career began as Engineer of the sea-going ‘AK Ulonga’ operating from Port Adelaide
His river-going captaincy commenced on the original ‘MV Barrangul’ renamed the ‘Tangara’ operating from Mannum. Then in 1979 Steve purchased his own river boat, the ‘PS Julie Fay’. He is also President of the Murray Skippers Association, and a marine engineer.
Chrissy Brindal, culinary and catering director, grew up sailing yachts at the Royal South Australian Yacht squadron, and as a child, was one of its youngest members. Her father Ion Ullett was commodore of RSAYS in the early 70’s, and her mother, Margaret Ullett, was the squadron’s first female member. Chrissy is also secretary of the Murray Skippers Association.
Catering on the ‘Mundoo’ at Mildura incited Chrissy’s passion for culinary cuisine, and sampling the galley fare, aboard the MV Barrangul, will not disappoint. Sourced from the local area, the produce is sustainably grown and prepared fresh daily. Tastes of the river environs guarantee a complete ‘riverland’ experience, and the menu has something to tempt everyones palate ; Old-time favourites of rabbit ragout and yabbies, tapas & tasting plates, river fish of the day to paddle wheel pizzas for the little ones… just reading the menu is mouth-watering!
The fully licensed bar offers a selection of wine, beer and soft drink, crafted by local brewers, and sourced from vineyards in the riverland.
